The Ministries of St. Andrew's

God gives to our hands graces for growth; Growth comes by many in service for God

Altar Guild

Altar Guild members are called to a nearly invisible servant ministry of setting the scene for corporate worship.  They ensure that the things needful to worship are in place and that God is honored in the setting.

The members of the Altar Guild prepare and care for the vessels, linens, vestments, articles and supplies for the Eucharist. Guild members work on a rotating schedule, singly or in pairs in accordance with local custom. The Altar Guild is also responsible for the procurement, arrangement and disposal of the flowers.

Participants are called to a ministry of helping complete the Service in an orderly fashion and helping where needed based on specific roles.

In St. Andrew's the most commonly used titles are Chalicer: a lay person who administers the chalice (cup) during Communion; Lector: a lay person who reads the lessons from the Old and New Testament; Intercessor: a lay person who leads the prayers of the people on St. Andrew's prayer list and for other persons mentioned by the congregation; Acolyte: a lay person who carries the torch or cross into and out of the church and at the reading of the Gospel; Usher: a lay person who hands out the Service and Bulletin materials and helps escort people to and from communion; and Welcomer: a lay person who greets worshippers and, if visitors, asks them to sign the guest registry and gives a brief overview of St. Andrew's.

A representative of the vestry, Minister of Trash and the Hosts of the Coffee Hour are included in the Schedule for the Ministers of the Liturgy because they help provide important information, vital services that benefit the entire congregation and represent the welcoming community of St. Andrew's during coffee hours in Fisher's Hall.

The Return of the Prodigal Son: A Story of Homecoming
by Henri Nouwen

Nouwen wrote this book after long reflection on Rembrandt's painting (seen to the right) of this parable, giving a fresh interpretation , in which he concluded, "Though I am both the younger son and the older son, I am not to remain them, but called to become the father."
