Historical Background

St. Andrew's Episcopal Church of Ojai is home to the Rosales Organ, Opus 10, one of the finest pipe organs in America. This 15-stop tracker organ was dedicated in 1983 and has gained a national reputation through recitals and recordings.

The organ's design was by David J. Dickson, with Manual J. Rosales, and is inspired by the organ from 1530 in Oosthuizen, The Netherlands.

Keys

The key action is suspended-mechanical with trackers of pine and bockwood. Key action rollers are steel with stainless steel arms. The mechanical stop action is from oak and steel. The manual keys are covered with cow bone with ebony sharps, and the pedal keys are maple with rosewood sharps.

Pipes

The pipes of the Choir division are located in "Brustwerk" position, behind hinged doors which are controlled by an expression pedal.

The organ is voiced at 80mm wind pressure, produced by a 1/3 horsepower blower and regulated by a 3'x6' wedge-shaped bellows.

The casework is oiled, quarter-sawed white oak. The pipeshades of basswood are carved with acon and oak leaf motifs symbolic of Ojai and the crossed fishes and the shield of St. Andrew, the patron of the Church. The pipeshades were designed by John Erik Noran.

The facade and interior pipes are constructed from Commonmetal composed of 25-35% tin with the remainder, except for the Trumpet and Dulciana which are 52% spotted metal. The 16' Bourdon and the bass of the Pedal Prestant are sugar pine, and the bass of the Choir Gedeckt is rosewood.

The temperament is based on Kirnberger III.

She has also been a performer with several choral groups, most recently with the First United Methodist Church’s concert (performing Ralph Vaughn William’s Dona Nobis Pacem) and has sung with the Ojai Camerata for several seasons.

Sara is a very active member of the Ventura chapter of the American Guild of Organists and is the inspiration for the Opus 10 peformance at St. Andrew's by Dr. James Welch on October 4, 2009.

Sara continues to hone her expertise and knowledge by attending as many workshops and master classes as her busy schedule allows. A short list would include courses with the Royal School of Church Music, America; summer workshops at Trinity Church, Princeton, MA (with a final program sung at St. Thomas, Church, Manhattan, NY); and a  winter workshop with Dr. Philip Brunelle at Trinity Wallstreet, Lower Manhattan, NY.

Sara continues to study the organ with Carl Swanson and David Gell, makes her home in Ventura and works the Administration Office at The Thacher School, Ojai.
